DELEGATION
August 2019
This delegation was organized by Alianza Americas, our member organization Centro Presente, the Lawyers Committee For Civil Rights and Economic Justice, and Massachusetts legislators Andrés X. Vargas and Nika C. Elugardo. We met immigrant human rights defenders and legal experts in Honduras and El Salvador to document the political, economic and social conditions that cause the exodus of people seeking protection in the U.S.
Delegates also met with representatives of the Garifuna community of African descent, affected by the state oppression and occupation of their ancestral grounds by palm oil investors. The visit included a trip to El Progreso, Honduras, where a panel discussion was held with leading human rights activists and victims of state oppression. Additionally, the visit to El Salvador included a panel discussion with delegates on the most recent migratory measures taken by the Trump Administration and their impact on Central America.
