Climate Justice

Humanizing Climate Justice

The planet's deterioration in its capacity to sustain life is now an existential threat, impacting communities worldwide. Destructive, extractive, and exploitative economic practices over the past two centuries have led to ecological degradation, disproportionately affecting the Americas. This environmental degradation is a key to understanding human mobility and is reshaping migration in unprecedented ways. Alianza America's climate and environmental justice efforts prioritize racial and economic equity and empower migrant and rural displaced communities as leaders in the climate movement.

Goals:

  • We work to inform and position members of Alianza Americas as reliable reference on climate and environmental issues that affect people of Latin American and Caribbean origin in the U.S. and their countries of origin.
  • We aim to establish a network of advocates for climate justice who will collaborate to build a shared understanding of climate change, its impacts, and actionable solutions tailored to our communities' needs and circumstances.
  • We strengthen our membership and allies' awareness of how the climate crisis influences migration patterns in Latin America, particularly in northern Cental America and Mexico. This includes advocating for initiatives that migrate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Using popular education workshops, we've engaged with four community-based organizations and their members to talk about the just transition, energy efficiency, and the benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)-including rebates for high-efficiency home appliances and Solar for All. Through Ahorrar es Cuidar, we help our organizations advocate for inclusivity and accessibility in creating specific state and local rebate programs, raise awareness for available benefits within our communities, and create resources for advocacy and raising community awareness of IRA benefits.
