In the framework of the commemoration of the International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples, Alianza Americas, a network of organizations led by immigrants of Latin American and Caribbean origin in the United States, recognizes and celebrates their leadership and resistance in defending their identity, their culture, their languages, and their collective rights, including their territories. Indigenous communities are an example of resilience and solidarity manifested in their daily sharing and the prioritization of the common good.
Indigenous peoples' leadership is essential to challenging and ending extractive economic activities in their territories. Their resistance is based on communal work and collective organization, the backbone of the struggle for justice and collective memory. This is part of their ancestral wisdom, which we can and must learn.
Indigenous peoples' self-determination is essential for their survival and is based on their political capacity to deliberate and organize collectively. This continuous and dynamic process responds to the transformations and challenges imposed by the State and the capitalist economic model throughout history.
On the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we call for the recognition and respect of their right to self-determination, their leadership, and their knowledge in protecting the planet and all forms of life.
