Chicago, IL — Today is a significant day for Guatemala: Bernardo Arévalo steps in as president of the nation alongside Karin Herrera as vice president. The inauguration marks a milestone in the country’s democracy, and we recognize the commitment of both leaders to address the challenges the nation is currently facing.
Alianza Americas—a network of more than 50 organizations led by Latin American and Caribbean migrants living in the United States who are dedicated to promoting the well-being of their communities in their countries of origin—urges the new leadership to maintain a transparent, inclusive, and dialogue-oriented management that fosters unity and collaboration in building a more promising future for Guatemala. In this moment of renewal and hope, we also express our concern for the complexity of the nation’s challenges.
In this context, we recall that the year 2023 was marked by the criminalization and political persecution of opposing views, as well as the illegal management of state institutions that threatened Guatemalan democracy and the will of the people expressed through their vote. In addition, we recognize the courageous mass mobilization and leadership of indigenous people who have defended the integrity of the electoral results for more than 100 days. We also recognize the popular dissatisfaction with authoritarian and corrupt governments that have ignited greater political awareness and has highlighted the importance of citizen participation.
Guatemala’s new government has the opportunity to exercise its role in defending fundamental human rights, freedom of the press, and a firm commitment to climate justice. Government transparency is essential to regain the people’s trust and consolidate a democracy capable of solving the problems faced by the majority. We advocate for a clear commitment to the defense of human rights. Freedom of the press must be safeguarded as a fundamental pillar of an informed and participatory society. In the current climate challenges in Guatemala, we urge the adoption of just and sustainable measures that effectively address environmental concerns, ensuring an equitable and resilient future.
We urge President Arevalo to ensure legality, transparency, and plural representation throughout his administration by promoting inclusive dialogue with migrant communities. The newly formed cabinet reflects political and social diversity but faces the challenge of representing all sectors, especially those whose voices have been historically excluded. Only through active collaboration and attention to the demands of all sectors, including the diaspora, can we build a democratic and just future for all Guatemalans, inside and outside the country.
