Alianza Americas and our network of 58 member organizations representing thousands of Latin American and Caribbean immigrants across the United States and Latin America welcome a peaceful transfer of power in Mexico and new President Claudia Sheinbaum. “The election of a woman president is a historical event. It reflects that affirmative action policies, like quota laws, advance the political participation of women. This is a moment of inclusion and equity to be celebrated.” said Guadalupe de la Cruz, Board President of Alianza Americas and Program Director of Seeds of Resistance in Florida.
“However, great challenges lie ahead: One urgent matter for millions of Mexicans is the lack of public safety, which continues to bring hardship and death for too many Mexican nationals every year. The soon to arrive Sheinbaum Administration will have to address multiple forms of violence, from a wide array of actors, as a priority challenge. Equally, accountability for past atrocities, including forced disappearances of both Mexican nationals and migrants remains a pending issue that cannot be ignored.” added de la Cruz.
While widespread violence is an urgent priority, México’s greatest challenge continues to be its failure to articulate the right set of economic, social, political, and cultural changes, necessary to make Mexico a nation where no one has to seek a dignified way of life abroad,” stated Angela Sanbrano, Director of Red Mexicana Los Angeles. Over the past few years, Mexico has become the most important commercial and trading partner to the United States of America. However, this reality has not translated into real opportunities for the average Mexican for whom a dignified, prosperous, and secured way of life continues to be elusive,” concluded Sanbrano.
The first female President has the potential to offer a vision of hope and pride to all Mexicans by creating truly new opportunities for other women, as well as for Indigenous peoples, Afro-Mexicans, and Mexicans abroad. “Many Mexicans have been left behind and are expecting effective protection against the discrimination that they confront every day. Mexicans need a national government committed to ensure an active and affirmative role of the State to overcome inequities that continue impacting their living conditions and the guarantee and protection of their rights.” said Claudia Lucero, of Durango Unido in Chicago. “As an immigrant member-led organization, Alianza Americas must advocate for migrants in Mexico who face abuses at the hands of State actors and criminal organizations. We ask President Sheinbaum to reject pressure from the United States to crack down on migrants that would result in more indifference towards immigrants and even acts of violence against them.” added Lucero.
Alianza Americas calls on the President to respond to the historic challenges and opportunities ahead, continuing to advance equity and upholding the rule of law.
