Chicago, IL – El Salvadoran Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries have less than a month to re-register for the program to maintain their protection from deportation and their work permit.
On January 10, 2025, former Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced the extension of El Salvador's TPS for 18 months. This extension will allow those who re-register to retain protection from March 10, 2025, through September 9, 2026.
Together with our member organizations, we remind TPS beneficiaries from El Salvador who have not yet re-registered that renewal is not automatic and that “You snooze, you lose TPS.” “We are calling on beneficiaries to submit Forms I-821 to extend their TPS and Form I-765 to request a new employment authorization card (EAD) to the Citizenship and Immigration (USCIS) office corresponding to their place of residence,” explained Yanira Arias, TPS beneficiary and Migrant Justice Coordinator for Alianza Americas.
“Salvadorans who are eligible for TPS must register before March 18, 2025, to renew their authorization to work in the U.S. and not be exposed to deportation,” said Helena Olea, Deputy Director of Alianza Americas.
“We urge people protected by TPS from El Salvador not to wait until the last day; this is a rigorous process that requires time. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today!” said Abel Núñez, Vice President of the Board of Directors of Alianza Americas and Executive Director of CARECEN DC.
In this document, we clarify frequently asked questions and respond to the misinformation that we know is circulating among TPS beneficiaries.
We suggest visiting our legal services directory, which includes a list of organizations with a track record and experience assisting the TPS beneficiary community.
