What is the “Open Enrollment Period” and How Can It Help Our Wellbeing

December 3, 2024

December 3, 2024 — The Open Enrollment Period is an annual window in which individuals that live in the United States have the opportunity to purchase a new health insurance plan or make changes to their current health plan. This is a key moment to protect yourself and your family.

This year, Open Enrollment runs from November 1 to January 15, 2025. Enrollments or changes made before the end of the day on December 15 take effect on January 1, while those made between December 16 and before the end of the day on January 15 take effect on February 1.

It is important to check the exact dates in your state, as they may vary. Most states use the federal marketplace, run by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which can be accessed through HealthCare.gov. However, some states have chosen to run their own marketplace and website. These include: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Washington D.C.

How Can Open Enrollment Help Us Safeguard Our Mental and Emotional Wellbeing?

The Open Enrollment Period is more than just an annual procedure: it is an opportunity to prioritize our overall health, including our mental and emotional wellbeing. During this period, we can choose an insurance plan that covers all of our needs, including therapy, visits to a psychiatrist or psychologist, and medications for certain disorders, among other mental and emotional health-related services.

When selecting a health insurance plan, we can also compare options to find a plan with low deductibles, monthly premiums, co-payments, and co-insurance. Furthermore, depending on our family or individual income, we can also qualify for a tax credit that can help reduce our monthly premium costs. These measures not only help us save money, they also reduce financial stress related to medical expenses, thus contributing to our mental health care.

Options for Undocumented Individuals

Although few states have expanded access to private and public health insurance plans for undocumented individuals, there are options to ensure that everyone can take care of their health. In many places, there are community clinics or community health centers that offer physical and mental health services at little or no cost. In addition, some providers use a sliding-scale payment system that adjusts to people’s income to eliminate barriers to access essential services.

The Open Enrollment Period offers us the opportunity to protect our physical, mental, and emotional health. Taking the time to assess our needs and choosing the right plan can help make a big difference in our quality of life. Do not miss the opportunity to prioritize your wellbeing today!
