August 2019

Leaders of the Refuge for Families coalition took part in a delegation to Guatemala and Mexico, from August 3-7, to interact with local human right defenders and government officials working with the mixed flow of asylum seekers and migrants, affected by the escalating repressive policies, migrating to the U.S.

The delegation’s objective was to learn why migrants and refugees were fleeing from their countries of origin, as well as documenting and advocating for better protections for asylum seekers. This delegation took place during a moment when the Trump Administration pressed the Mexican government to execute military action against foreigners in transit. This pressure has extended to Central American countries, in an effort to develop an offshore migratory policy.
