Jan. 10, 2024 - Chicago, IL - Earlier today, the Biden Administration announced its decision to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals from El Salvador. The beneficiaries of this decision are long-term immigrants who have resided in the U.S. for over 30 years. Current immigration policy grants the executive branch of government discretionary power to extend this form of protection.

“We are grateful to President Biden for extending this much-needed protection for tens of thousands of long-term residents of the U.S. The beneficiaries of this decision are all hard-working individuals who are mothers and fathers of U.S.-born children who have contributed in multiple ways to the wellbeing of their families and the United States of America,” stated Dulce Guzmán, Alianza Americas’ executive director. “This decision is the result of the relentless organizing and advocacy work done on behalf of immigrant communities for many years by immigrant-led networks such as Alianza Americas, as well as a wide array of allied organizations,” concluded Ms. Guzmán.

“As someone who has been protected by TPS since 2001, the decision by the Biden Administration to extend TPS for several more months will provide a much-needed respite. We will use the newly gained months of protection to continue to organize and advocate for a just and lasting solution for the millions of people who have resided in the U.S. for many years but to whom U.S. laws deny us the possibility of applying for permanent residency,” stated Yanira Arias, a TPS beneficiary and Alianza Americas’ Migrant Justice Coordinator. “We will continue to reach out to the members of the 119th U.S. Congress to educate them on the importance of enacting laws that honor immigrants' invaluable contributions to U.S. society and ensure their right to apply for legal permanent residency,” concluded Ms. Arias.

We urge the Biden administration to extend TPS for other countries with approaching deadlines. The situation in several countries, including Haiti and Honduras, merits a TPS extension. Finally, we call on the Biden administration to issue a new designation of TPS for Nicaragua, considering the political repression that its people are enduring and which is forcing thousands to flee.
