The delegation, led by CARECEN DC and Alianza Americas, also includes representatives of philanthropic organizations.

Washington, DC – A delegation composed of Congressman Glenn Ivey (MD-04); Mahasin El Amin, Clerk of the Circuit Court, Prince George’s County; and Canek Aguirre, Council Member, City of Alexandria, along with representatives of philanthropic organizations from the Washington, DC metropolitan area, will visit El Salvador between February 19 and 23 to learn first-hand about the social, democratic, and economic situation the country is facing.

The delegation is organized by the Central American Resource Center of Washington, DC (CARECEN DC), whose mission is to foster the comprehensive development of the Latino population by providing direct services while promoting grassroots empowerment, civic engagement, and human rights advocacy, and Alianza Americas, a multi-ethnic network of more than 50 organizations led by Latin American and Caribbean immigrants in the United States. The delegation will hold meetings with government representatives, including El Salvador’s Vice President Felix Ulloa, Viceminister of External Relations Adriana Mira, Director of Investment, Clarissa Valdebran, Coordinator of the Office of Intelligence and Economic Policy Laura Pacheco, and includes a visit to the Centro de Atención al Migrante (Migrant Assistance Center). In addition, meetings will be held with leaders of civil society organizations, academia and the investigative press.

“I am looking forward to our trip to El Salvador. It will be a first-hand look at the economic, cultural, and familial ties to many of my constituents in Maryland. I know the Central American Resource Center, governmental, civic, and business leaders in El Salvador will have much to discuss on our visit.  My first trip abroad as a U.S. Congressman is with a delegation to El Salvador. I am ready to learn more about, engage and connect with the people of El Salvador to better serve our residents and our community in Maryland and the United States,” said Rep. Glenn Ivey.

In addition to Washington-area elected officials, the delegation includes Victor Ramirez, attorney and former Maryland State Senator; Ruth LaToison Ifill, President & CEO ofWRAG; Edgar Aranda-Yanoc, Director of Virginia Partnerships and Strategy of theMeyer Foundation; José Knippen, Migration and Forced Displacement Manager at Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP); Abel Nuñez, Executive Director of CARECEN DC; Oscar Chacón, Executive Director of Alianza Americas; and Vanessa Velasco, of CARECEN San Francisco.

“The delegation is important for U.S. elected officials such as Congressman Ivey and members of the philanthropic community to learn about the conditions in the country that has forced many of its nationals to migrate, as well as to create connections with all the decision makers in the region to develop solutions to the problems that force people to migrate,” added Abel Nuñez, executive director of CARECEN DC.
