Salvadoran journalist Carlos Martinez was awarded the Maria Moors Cabot Award

Alianza Americas greatly values the contributions of investigative journalism to defend democracy in Latin America. We celebrate the work of Salvadoran journalist Carlos Martínez, recipient of the Maria Moors Cabot Award from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, recognizing his unwavering commitment to the best journalism, especially in investigative reporting. This award is a testament to the quality of Martínez's work covering crucial issues such as migration, torture, human rights violations, organized crime, and prison systems in Central America and Mexico.

We call attention to the immense challenges independent media in Central America face in telling stories and revealing truths. The courage and commitment of journalists like Carlos Martínez are a factor of hope in the struggle for democracy. In this context, freedom of the press is crucial to keep the population informed and to carry out accountability exercises.

We congratulate Carlos Martínez for this well-deserved recognition and reaffirm our support for independent journalism in Central America, whose work is crucial to the strengthening of democracy and the promotion of human rights in the region.
